Outdoor Academy Series

Get out into nature with our programs just for students grades K-12th!

Are you looking for something fun and educational to do with your students? Are your children interested in science and the great outdoors? Then, register to join the Meadows Center at the Spring Lake Outdoor Academy!

These educational classes are designed for K-12th grade students to get outside and experience nature firsthand while enjoying The Meadows Center's exhibits and programs at Spring Lake. Homeschool students are encouraged to register.

This series is perfect for smaller groups and families who cannot meet the 15-person minimum for a field trip at Spring Lake. 

Class Schedule and Registration Details

Classes take place on one Tuesday of each month and feature hands-on activities, including a guided glass-bottom boat ride and interactive learning sessions that explore the interconnections between all living things and water. 

Morning classes are limited to 40 participants, while afternoon classes are limited to 20 participants. Check-in starts at 9:45 a.m. for morning sessions and at 1:30 p.m. for afternoon sessions.

Pre-registration is required. Tickets are $10 per person; children two and under are free. An adult must accompany children, and tickets are required for both children and adults.

  • Fall 2024 Schedule

    • How can we connect with the natural world? Join us to discover how to tap into our senses to gain a deeper understanding of the natural world. We’ll practice mindfulness in nature using thoughtful games and crafts designed to enhance your sensory awareness and foster a meaningful connection with nature.

      Classes Offered: 

      • Morning (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) – 40 people max
      • Afternoon (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) – 20 people max

       

    • Let’s learn about the cultures that have existed and thrived in Central Texas for thousands of years! During this program, we will experience the indigenous cultures' ways of life through games and crafts. 

      Classes Offered: 

      • Morning (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) – 40 people max
      • Afternoon (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) – 20 people max

       

    • Enjoy the crisp autumn air on a guided hike through the scenic Spring Lake Nature Preserve. Together, we'll create and use custom field guides to explore the local fauna and observe the changing seasons. Bring water and wear close-toed shoes for a safe and enjoyable journey!

    • Rain or shine, Earth is our home. Join us to delve into the fascinating world of weather and climate! Learn about the importance of protecting green spaces and teaching others about water conservation as we navigate Earth’s changing climate.

  • Spring 2025 Schedule

    • In honor of World Wetlands Day, we will take you on an adventure through the Meadows Center’s prized Wetlands. Join us to explore the vital role of wetlands in our ecosystem, discover the diverse plants and animals that inhabit this unique environment, and learn how to protect them!

      Classes Offered:

      • Afternoon (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) – 20 people max

       

    • What does it mean to live on a “water planet?” Join us for a deep dive into the fascinating world of water! We'll unravel the mysteries of the water cycle, discover where on Earth we can find water, and learn how to protect our watersheds through fun, hands-on activities. Get ready to make a splash while gaining a new appreciation for our planet's most vital resource!

    • Spring has sprung, and so has the wildlife! Join us for an exciting adventure as we delve into the vibrant fauna of Central Texas. Discover what it takes to protect our wildlife as we learn about endangered and threatened species, aquatic life, and the intricate relationships between the creatures that call Spring Lake home.

    • Butterflies, bees, and moths…oh my! With spring flowers in full bloom, join us for a buzzing good time as we explore the fascinating world of pollinators at Spring Lake. Through engaging crafts, games, and real-world observations, we'll uncover the secrets of pollinators and their interactions with native plants. Come discover the magic of the incredible creatures that keep our ecosystem flourishing!

    • Ever wondered how the rocks of Central Texas came to be? Join us for a hands-on adventure, where we'll dig into the stories these stones tell about our history and the world around us. Through interactive activities and crafts, you'll uncover the fascinating tales hidden within the rocks beneath your feet. Come rock out with us and discover the geological wonders of Central Texas!

  • Visitors' vehicles are required to display a permit in the Meadows Center parking lot. One-day temporary permits are available for $3 at the pay-and-display station located near the ticket kiosk.

  • We require five business days' notice if you would like to reschedule or cancel your reservation for a refund. If, for any reason, we must cancel the tour (bad weather, etc.), you will be allowed to reschedule for a future program date or receive a full refund. Refunds will be applied to the credit card that was used for payment. If you cannot attend your reserved program due to an extenuating circumstance, each case will be evaluated by Meadows Center staff for an opportunity to retain your program credit for a future date.
